“Most of our happiness depends on our disposition not on circumstances.”— Martha Washington, 1786
One of the most underrated healing tools is the art of feeling good. There’s a lot of science behind it because it’s evolved with the chemical changes inside your body and how those changes help you get well.
Also, there’s even more empirical evidence to back it up because of the work Marge and her teachers have done to help people rehabilitate themselves.
It’s like a drug in that it is made of chemicals, but there are no harmful side effects, it cost nothing, it can be self prescribed and self administered without the FDA putting you or us or anyone in jail.
All of that would be enough, but there’s more. You can take it anytime, anywhere. It can be taken when you’re alone and stressed out or when you’re in a crowd and when you take it in a crowd, the entire group will usually chime right in because its contagious in a very nice way.
It’s very easy to take with you, anywhere, because it also weighs nothing. It’s invisible and no motion detector or infrared scanner can spot it or stop you from taking it no matter how much authorities would like you to.
It is the key to feeling good because you just naturally feel better when you take it.
For anyone who hasn’t already guessed where we’re going with this, the tool we’re suggesting is called laughter.
Why is it so important? Because it is the one thing that you can do that will make you feel good regardless of any outside influence.
Why? Because you can’t be sad and happy, depressed and euphoric at the same time and laughter is the easiest way to move forward toward that good feeling your in search of. Once you start, it builds upon itself so that the more things you find to laugh about the more things you’ll find to laugh at.
Here’s what science tells us about all this.
Laughter causes chemical changes inside your body which are forerunners to changing your state of mind.
Your body produces many chemicals in order to function naturally well. These are natural compounds that make your body work and most people are aware of them but haven’t given them much thought. Hormones are one group and your immune system is another and the list goes on.
In order to feel good you get an assist from a very special compound called endorphin that is produced in two places. Your pituitary gland dumps this product into the blood and your hypothalamus sends its supply directly to your brain.
Endorphins are the body’s natural pain killers. Studies show that laughter and the related benefits of it lowers blood pressure, reduces stress hormones, increases muscle flexion, raises levels of infection-fighting T-cells and produces disease destroying antibodies.
“Happy people just don’t get sick,” said Dr. Bernie Siegel, M.D. in his book Love, Medicine and Miracles.
“But what if I have nothing to laugh about?” You might ask.
Answer is simple, but not very palatable when you feeling punk. There are always things to laugh at everywhere and a good place to start is to make something up. Your body won’t know the difference between what occurs and what you tell it is occurring. Your brain is in charge. Your thoughts are senior.
Also, you can draw on the actions that have been created to promote laughter at these trying times. Here are several ideas that have been used by—now get ready for this—laughter clubs. Yes, people who meet regularly for the sole purpose of laughing.
It is believed to have started in 1995 in Mumbai, India when 5 people met in a public park and this idea is now world wide as well as being used by corporations, on cruise ships, fitness centers, yoga studios, senior centers, self help cancer groups, colleges and universities and even in prisons to improve inmate/guard relations.
Ok? Try this. It’s called laughter cream. Rub your hands together rapidly to develop some heat in them. While doing this get the idea that you are creating a powerful and healing laughter cream. When ready, apply this cream all over your body and laugh in doing so. Soon, the laugh will be genuine.
Or, try this. Find your laughter center. Probe your head with one finger as if looking for a spot that makes you laugh and imagine each spot you touch triggers a different laughter sound—like, Tehe, hoho, haha, (one of our favorites) heehaw.
Or Ralph’s favorite that he says never fails. It’s a story about a fishing trip with an outboard motor taking you to the best fishing whole. You know how those cranky outboards are. They never start without an argument and sputter around before really taking hold.
Ready? Ok. HA- - - putt putt pop—Hahahaha-heh- - - heh- - -putt pop— HAROOM—- - PLUP, PLUP—TSHEEEeee, Harumph, fump. —hahahahahahahaha, hum, hum — hum —Haaaaaaa—ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha- - and now your on your way to have a great day
Silly? Of course! But that’s why it works. All of these drills are a variation a laugh program used by one of the more than 6,000 laughter clubs, world wide.
Part of laughter is surprise, in other words seeing something mundane in an unusual way. It doesn't have to make sense and it works best when it doesn’t.
Years ago, Ralph was shopping for the product “Bounce” and asked an employee where it was.
The clerk took him to the product and when they got there, Ralph picked up a box and threw it on the floor. It landed with a thud and just lay there motionless. “Oh, oh,” Ralph said, “that one’s broken.” Everyone nearby laughed.
Oh yes, lest we forget, if any laughter is good, finding ways to laugh at yourself is many times better. Splurge on it! |
